The Chimgan range rises 90 kilometres east of Tashkent, where the westernmost ridges of the Tian Shan system meet the Chatkal valley. Soviet planners opened the Beldersay cable lift in 1989, engineering a 900-metre ascent that cut a four-hour climb to eleven minutes and transformed a herding corridor into Central Asia's first alpine resort district. Charvak reservoir formed behind a rockfill dam in 1970, submerging the confluence of four mountain rivers beneath 155 million cubic metres of glacial meltwater. The reservoir sits at 960 metres elevation; peaks above it reach 3,309 metres at Kumbel summit. In winter the range draws regional ski traffic; in summer the lake's surface temperature climbs to 24 degrees and the shoreline fills with swimmers, kayakers, and families escaping the capital's 40-degree heat. Today, the Bostanliq district anchors Uzbekistan's outdoor tourism economy. Amirsoy resort opened ski and mountain-biking infrastructure in 2019, installing a six-kilometre gondola and year-round trail system. The Chimgan mountains and charvak lake tour corridor serves 180,000 visitors annually, 60 per cent arriving between May and September. Trails fan across alpine meadows at 2,000 metres, where Kyrgyz herders graze cattle beneath snowfields that persist into July. The district maintains marked routes to waterfalls at Gulkam canyon, to the ridge overlook at Chimgan peak's 2,100-metre saddle, and along the eastern Charvak shore where erosion has exposed Paleozoic limestone strata. Tour operators run daily departures from Tashkent, typically combining cable-car access, lakefront stops, and optional paragliding or horseback extensions. The reservoir's perimeter stretches 26 kilometres, fed by the Chatkal, Pskem, Koksu, and Ugam rivers. Water level fluctuates by three metres seasonally, peaking in late June after spring melt and dropping through autumn as irrigation demands increase downstream. The south shore holds resort complexes at Yusupovskoye and Charvak village; the north shore remains forested and undeveloped, accessible only by boat or unpaved track. Birdlife includes golden eagles, lammergeiers, and migratory waterfowl that rest during April and October passages. The mountains shelter Marco Polo sheep, ibex, and grey wolves in higher valleys. Uzbekistan's government declared the Chatkal range a biosphere reserve in 1978, protecting 72,000 hectares of juniper forest and subalpine scrub. Access remains open year-round, though winter storms close the Tashkent–Charvak highway several days each January.
